THE PEAK OF CONSCIOUSNESS

What would it mean to you to be free of death, pain, or suffering? What would it mean to live forever in an android’s body; part human, but mostly mechanical?  It is the basis of several stories in science fiction, and may someday be reality, but is it really possible, and should we do such a thing in the first place?

The brain is comprised of 85 billion individual neurons, and 10,000 axons and dendrites. These biological transmitters and receivers send electromagnetic signals, which jump from the axon of one neuron to the dendrite of another. Scientists believe that the essence of who we are; our memories, emotions, and personalities lies within these patterns. They also believe that the brain is similar to a computer, and the process of neurons similar to a binary code.

In April 2013, President Obama unveiled the BRAIN initiative, which allowed research on brain cells. This research, and mapping of the human brain to a computer has helped in the area of bionics, where brain cells and neurons are linked to perform various muscular functions in artificially motorized limbs.

The process of uploading a human brain to a computer, robot, or android is still decades, if not centuries away. Storing a human brain, which has been moderately successful, for possible future transplants or uploading, has been achieved by cryonics, or by pumping chemicals through the body that can fix proteins or lipids, then removing the brain, and placing in a type of preservative resin.

Skeptics of the idea say that brain functions are not computable, the brain cannot live long without the body, it’s unethical, and would leave androids or computers open to cyber attacks. So how do you feel about the subject? Should it be done, or shouldn’t?  Do you really want to live forever, or is life something that is not to be tampered with? Until my next blog, have a great day, and give it some food for thought.
